Sickness & Exclusion Periods For Children

DISEASE / ILLNESS MINIMUM EXCLUSION PERIOD
Vomiting and /or Diarrhoea 48 Hours from last episode of diarrhoea or vomiting
Temperature Above 38 Degrees If not gone down with medication child needs to be excluded
Flu Until recovered
Chickenpox Until all vesicles have crusted over
Hepatitis A* Exclude until 7 days after onset of jaundice (or 7 days after symptom onset if no jaundice)
Hepatitis B* and C* HIV/AIDS No exclusion
Measles Four days from onset of rash. Consult with doctor and HPU
Meningococcal meningitis/Septicaemia Until recovered from the illness consult with doctor and PHE
Meningitis due to other bacteria Until recovered from the illness consult with doctor and PHE
Meningitis viral None, consult with doctor and PHE
Mumps Five days from the onset of swelling. Consult with doctor and PHE
Pertussis (whooping cough) 5 days from treatment with antibiotics or

21 days from the onset of paroxsysmal cough without antibiotics.

Rubella (German measles) 4 days from the onset of rash. Consult with doctor and PHE
Scarlet fever 24 hours after starting appropriate antibiotic

treatment

Tuberculosis Always consult with PHE
Impetigo Until lesions are crusted or healed, or 48 hours after starting antibiotic treatment
Ringworm No exclusion usually required, but treatment is

required

Scabies Child can return after first treatment
